At the Sixtieth Session of the World Meteorological Organization Executive Council (Geneva, 18-27 June 2008) was approved the following resolution:

  • 3.5.3.3. The Council endorsed the MEditerranean climate DAta REscue (MEDARE) initiative, which was set-up under the auspices of WMO in collaboration with CCl, NMHSs, universities and research centres to develop a high quality instrumental climate dataset for the Greater Mediterranean Region(GMR). It supported the MEDARE action-plan including the set up of a web portal for information exchange on DARE in GMR and the resulting data and metadata, as well as for providing information on technical procedures and guidance in carrying out data rescue activities. The web portal should also provide capability for climate data search and discovery to serve various purposes, including research and applications. The Council thanked the Agencia EspaƱola de Meteorologia (AEMET) of Spain and the Spanish University of Rovira i Virgili in Tarragona and other Spanish organisations, for hosting and co-sponsoring the International Workshop on Rescue and Digitization of Climate Records, organized by WMO in Tarragona, Spain, November 2007,during which the initiative was launched. It urged all Members, and particularly those in the Mediterranean Region, to support the initiative.
